PURPOSE. PEOPLE. PERFORMANCE.

Better outcomes
start with better
relationships, and
better processes.

I help leaders build belonging-based, high-performing organizations—places where people feel they matter and the business delivers what its customers value.

25+ years connecting people, business, and technology

Based in Michigan. Curious by nature.

A familiar starting point

You have good people.
Some of the work still gets stuck.

Organizational effectiveness

Observe the work and the interactions.
See where stuff gets stuck.

Look at how priorities are set, how decisions get made, and where work waits. Together, we can find a small change that makes a meaningful difference.

Working together

A useful partner.
A practical path forward.

For founders, leadership teams, and organizations that want their people and their business to thrive together.

01Organizational effectivenessMake the work work better.

When a capable team is overextended or progress keeps stalling, the way work is organized deserves a closer look. I help leaders connect everyday practices with the outcomes they want.

What we can work on

  • Priorities, workload, and the flow of work
  • Decision-making and team responsibilities
  • Knowledge sharing and collaboration
  • Customer relationships and meaningful measures

A useful starting point: a shared picture of what’s happening, followed by a focused experiment.

02Paired CTOConnect technology to what the business needs.

Technology choices are also business and people choices. I work alongside founders and leaders to make sense of tradeoffs, ask better questions, and strengthen the relationships that make delivery possible.

What we can work on

  • Technology strategy and product priorities
  • Delivery health and team structure
  • Vendor decisions and platform dependence
  • Architecture risks and concentrated knowledge

A useful starting point: one consequential decision, with its business context and tradeoffs made clear.

03Leadership & team learningBuild understanding through shared experience.

A good workshop gives people something real to think about together. I design conversations and hands-on learning around the patterns a team wants to understand and the changes it wants to try.

Questions we can explore

  • Are we effective, or simply busy?
  • Do people feel they matter here?
  • What does our system make difficult?
  • What would we learn from a small experiment?

A useful starting point: a facilitated session around a live team challenge, with an agreed next step.

How I work

Listen closely.
Look at the whole.
Try something useful.

People, processes, and technology shape each other. Lasting improvement starts by understanding those relationships.

01 / Understand

Begin with what matters.

Listen to the people doing the work. Clarify what customers need, what the organization is trying to accomplish, and where the two are falling out of alignment.

02 / Make it visible

See the system together.

Follow real work through the organization. Surface the handoffs, competing priorities, and assumptions that are easy to miss from one person’s perspective.

03 / Learn by doing

Make a change you can learn from.

Choose a manageable experiment. Agree on what to observe, try it with the team, and use what happens to decide the next step.

A principle I keep returning to

Focus on effectiveness.
Ask what the work is for.

Before making a process faster, ask whether it is helping people deliver something their customers actually care about.

A little about me

I’m James.
Helping your team build better ways of getting work done.

I’ve spent more than 25 years working at the intersection of people, business, and technology.

As a co-founder and former COO of Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor, I helped shape an organization around collaboration, shared learning, and respect for people. That experience continues to inform how I think about leadership and the daily practices that make a culture real.

Today, I bring that perspective to leaders working through questions of growth, teamwork, operations, and technology. I’m interested in building places where people feel they belong—and where the organization reliably delivers something worthwhile.

Outside work, I’m drawn to nature and macro photography. Looking closely, noticing patterns, and staying curious are habits I carry into my work, too.

“His fingerprints are everywhere, in both process and people.”
